Hi,
Greg and myself owned a 30ft keeler for 12 years, and a trailer sailer prior. Annual leave just wasn't enough, so we choose a path less travelled. Gave up work at 57 and have been full time living and sailing for 4+ years on a 42ft sailing catamaran based in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.
To continue this amazing lifestyle without selling a significant assett, we need to down size the boat to afford to spend our winters in the Pacific Islands and beyond.
We have discovered a 1997 Moody 36CC and it's the first monohull we feel we could comfortably live on and adventure in.
Not having many of these in NZ we would really appreciate you knowledge and expertise.
Does the fridge lid have a proper seal?
How effecient is it fridge in warm climates?
Is there anything we need to know or understand about the furling main?
A survey shows there are areas of the boat that are not accessible ie chain plates. How have others gained access to inspect?
In your opinion what's are some of the best and not so good attributes of the Moody 36CC.

We have lived aboard our 2000 Moody 36 in the Mediterranean on and off over the last four years with temptures occasionally in the high 30s. Our fridge is a keel cooled version and has performed reasonably well. We have added additional foam insulating strip to try to improve the seal around the lid and also recalibrated the thermostat - details in this thread:

We don't have a furling main, so can't advise on that.

For a 36ft boat we feel it's a great liveaboard boat. Nice aft cabin. A well built boat that handles heavy weather well.
It would be nice to have a larger fridge/freezer for live aboard life but we manage OK with ours.

Hi Nigel,
Many thanks for making the time to respond to our questions. We felt the fridge seak would also benefit from some improvements. We have 2 x Dometic 12v/240v 45L portable fridge/ freezer units we could potentially used ( they currently supplementing our catamarans capacity as we love to fish and vaccum freeze fish and meats )

Hi Mandy,
I have a Moody S38 for sale in Lisbon (Portugal) which always hands out the coldest beer in the anchorage! It keeps ice frozen in the bottom of the fridge for around a week. It has an Ozefridge eutectic tank system installed into the top loading fridge in 2017, when we beefed up the insulation.

She is available at £84,500 with Lisbon berth available if you would be happy with something a little larger (3 cabins 2 heads).

As you mentioned Moody 36s are rare in NZ so it is highly likely it is the one we owned from 2011 to 2019. I've been away on our Moody 54 in Vanuatu and New Caledonia and have only just got home after 5 months. We upgraded our M36 boat ( watermaker , outside instrument pod, new interior upholstery , 150amp alternator etc ) when we had it.
